Luke 21:20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following,
which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
The following is a discourse on the ordinance of the Lord's supper.
Is there a basis for calling this ordinance the "last supper" or "the Lord's supper?"
This was the last supper that Jesus ate before his crucifixion and Paul refered to it
as the Lord's supper in 1 Corinthians 11:20.
Is it something we should be observing today?
Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them saying,
This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.1 Corinthians 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show
the Lord's death till he come.
While the bible does not specifically state how often we must observe the Lord's supper it does
admonish us to be worthy if we do partake.
1 Corinthians 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord,
unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
It was also at this supper that Jesus first mentions a new testament.
Luke 22:20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood,
which is shed for you.
The old testament was the covenant of the first passover lamb. Now Jesus is our passover and new testament.
1 Corinthians 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened.
For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven,
of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Leaven is likened to wickedness (sin), malice (ill will), false doctrine, and hypocrisy. (Matthew 16:12, Luke 12:1)
All of which we should avoid if we are going to keep the Lord's supper.
