History of the Church

Play Song "Biblical Trace of the Church"

1 Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself
in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Below is a brief history of the Church of God.

  • Jesus Christ said he would build his church (Matthew 16:18)
  • The Church begins to be built on the day of Pentecost when the Apostles are filled with the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:1-4)
  • Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls (Acts 2:41)
  • And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved (Acts 2:47)
  • Saul, who was to become the Apostle Paul, was persecuting the Church of God (1 Corinthians 15:9)
  • The Apostle Paul is filled with the Holy Ghost (Acts 9:17)
  • Up to this point all who were saved were Jews.
  • Peter has a vision and the Holy Ghost falls on Cornelius, saving him and all his house, thus bringing the first Gentiles into the church (Acts 11:13-15)
  • The Apostle Paul begins preaching to the Gentiles (Acts 13:46)
  • Paul admonishes the elders of the church to take heed, and to feed the Church of God, for grievous wolves shall enter in to draw away disciples
    after them (Acts 20:28-29)

Note that these grievous wolves are drawing disciples away from the Church of God, and they are still at work today (1 Timothy 4:1)
  • The Apostle John writes of the beginning of apostasy, sectism, denominationalism, non-denominationalism, amd cults (1 John 2:18-19)
  • John writes in Revelation that God's people should come out of Babylon, that they be not partakers of her sins (Revelation 18:4)
  • When the end cometh, Jesus shall deliver up the kingdom (of God, or the church of God) to God (1 Corinthians 15:24)

The church is named after God as Paul stated in Ephesians 3:14-15 "For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named."

This tells us that the church is named after God. (Jesus is the Son of God).
We are the children of God (Mt 5:9), heirs of God (Rom 8:17), followers of God (Eph 5:1),
the elect of God (Col 3:12), the flock of God (1 Pet 5:2), why would we not be the Church of God?
Christ built the Church of God.
All of the apostles (except Judas Iscariot) were/are in the Church of God.
Paul was definitely in the Church of God.
Barnabus, Stephen, Timothy, Titus, and Cornelius were all in the Church of God.
All of the saints at Corinth were in the Church of God. (1 Cor 1:2)

Christ has only one body, which is the Church of God. (Eph 4:4; Col 1:18; and Acts 20:28)
A church that goes by some other name is some other body.

    Whose church are you in?
